Snare drums in the market are made of wood, metal or acrylic. They can be deep or shallow in depth depending on where the drums are played. There are marching band snare drums and even orchestral ones. Different sounds are produced by hitting the head, rim or shell of the drum with a stick or brush. Sometimes the sounds are produced in combination of any of the mentioned ones.

A snare drums has lengths of gut, metal or plastic cable tightly stretched across the drum head at the bottom. Sometimes it may also be found in the underside of the batter head to get a different sound. A snare drum is an integral part of a drum kit. When the head is struck with a stick the snares vibrate against the bottom to produce the desired sound. Rim shots are the peculiarity of a snare drum. When the head and the rim are struck at the same time with a stick the ensuing is a rim shot.

Snare drums seem to be in use since medieval times. From archival knowledge, it has made an appearance from the 15th century onwards. They were mostly a part of army bands and used to keep marching tunes for soldiers. When radio and communication systems did not appear on the scene, the military used snare drum beats to convey orders to the troops. This is the reason that in order to train as a snare drummer, a person has to necessarily understand military drumming before graduating to orchestral or pop music drumming.

The basic snare drums was continuously modified to improve sound quality. Materials used in its make up got better with time. The heads that were originally made of calf skin are now made of plastic. Snares that were earlier tied to the rim are now held between metal screws. The prices are higher for premium quality material and brands that are known to be good.
