snare drums can be made out of different materials like metal, wood, acrylic etc. It consists of two heads attached to a shell. The head of the drum which is the top part is made out of animal leather which is tightly stretched across the rim or sometimes some synthetic materials like plastic may also be used. The profound sound that the drum produces may be owed to the snares that are cords or wires made out plastic, metal or gut that run across the bottom of the drum. These snares may be tightened or loosened accordingly according to the sound needed.

Previously laces were used to control the tension of the heads which gave way to the top hoop which can be tightened with tension screws. The purpose of the snare drum determines its diameter, for e.g. orchestral snare drums have a diameter of 15-16 inches and the lower head will consist of 8-10 snares stretched across it. The depth of the drum will vary between 5-8 inches when measured from top to bottom.

Snare drums made for marching are built differently in order to produce a full thick resonating sound. The depth might even come up to an entire foot. In jazz music usually the drums used are played with brushes and not sticks and they run into depths of 6 inches. These are called jazz snare drums. Eight inch deep drums made of bronze, aluminum, brass that produces a louder sound are called metal snare drums.

There are smaller snares too, those that run into only 3 inches in depth which are called piccolo snares. Still smaller ones are known to exist and all of these are used to produce different sound effects. You can make your choice of drum depending upon your taste and expertise in playing the instrument.
